LINCOLN
Since its February and the month we celebrate Presidents Day I thought it was appropriate to feature the capitols that honor presidents. Up first is Lincoln, Nebraska. As it turns out I have been there three times. I visited Lincoln when I was about 4 years old the first time. My dad was going to summer school in Minnesota and we visited Lincoln on the way.
Then in 1993 we stopped for a quick picture at the capitol on our epic trip to North Carolina.

Since those early pictures, I have been trying to go inside the buildings as well as take the capitol steps pic. Most recently Kaitlyn and I took a long weekend for MLK day and flew into Kansas City and then traveled to Topeka, Lincoln and Jefferson City. Note to self: don’t travel to cities north of Phoenix in the winter. Don’t let the clear blue sky fool you. It was 6 degrees outside.
Nebraska’s capitol building definitely gets my “don’t judge a book by its cover” award. The tall tower “rising above the plains” is impressive but not overly majestic or ornate. The design was meant to represent the flat plains of Nebraska with a tower that could be seen for miles. It reminds me of the silos that are the landscape of Nebraska. It was constructed on the “pay as you go” budget. But when you walk inside, it is decorated with amazing mosaics, sculptures, woodwork, murals and glass.
